The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has called on Nigerians to prioritise health and safety during the festive season to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks often linked to increased gatherings and travel.
Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of the NCDC, appealed during an interview in Abuja, emphasising preventive measures to protect public health.
“As we celebrate this festive season, let us prioritise our health and safety. Remember to wash your hands regularly, stay home if you’re feeling unwell, and spread joy, not germs,” Dr. Idris advised.
Dr. Idris noted that past trends show a spike in communicable diseases during the holidays, including respiratory infections, foodborne illnesses, and cholera.
“During the 2022 holiday season, we observed a 20% rise in flu cases nationwide and foodborne illnesses in several states due to improper food handling,” he recalled.
Dr. Idris particularly warned against poor food hygiene during festive gatherings, saying, “It is critical to ensure proper food preparation and storage to prevent outbreaks. To protect yourself and your loved ones, the NCDC advises ensuring proper ventilation in crowded spaces to reduce the spread of airborne diseases.”
He continued, “Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, cook food properly, and avoid storing cooked meals at unsafe temperatures. Get vaccinated, especially for flu, to reduce risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions.”
Dr. Idris assured Nigerians that the NCDC, in collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders, is monitoring disease trends and is ready to respond to potential outbreaks. Emergency response hotlines remain active, and surveillance teams are on high alert nationwide.
He encouraged citizens to visit the NCDC website (www.ncdc.gov.ng) for detailed health guidelines and to call the toll-free line (6232) for assistance or to report suspected cases to their State Ministry of Health.
