Clicks is a Pharmacy, health and beauty retailer, and under fire over a controversial advert on hair types.
The hashtag #clicksmustfall has started trending on Twitter, with many calling for the boycott of Clicks products.
This was after Clicks posted an advert on the website comparing black women and white women’s hair.
They described black women hair type as dry and damaged hair, dull and frizzy hair, while they called white women’s hair normal, flat and fine.
This has angered a lot of black women and men who wear their hair natural to see it being described that way.
Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, a naturalista took to Twitter to criticize Clicks.
Zozi said
“Not only is this disrespectful to black lives, it is also evidence of an absence of representation and diversity within the organization. And we are talking about a South Africa with a population of about 80% black people (stand to be corrected). No ways.”
Another who wasn’t having it was musician Zakes Bantwini,
He asked black women with natural hair in all forms and lengths to post their pictures on Twitter and show how beautiful their natural hair is. A lot of African women on twitter posted their beautiful hairs.
He also called for a boycott of Clicks products especially on the 5th and 6th,
He tweeted;
“WITH THAT BEING SAID! I sincerely call upon all the African Woman in SA, Show them that you cannot be stopped ! You hold the power! Since talk is cheap and we can tweet all we want I ask that on the 5th and 6th we don’t buy anything from Clicks.”
Feeling the heat, Clicks then took to apologize
“We would like to issue an unequivocal apology. We have removed the images which go against everything we believe in. We do not condone racism and we are strong advocates of natural hair. We are deeply sorry and will put in place stricter measures on our website.
We have made a mistake and sincerely apologise for letting you down. We recognise we have a role to play in creating a more diverse and inclusive S.A, starting with our website content. We know we need to do better, and commit to ensuring our content better reflects this value.”
